Kasey Kahne won the pole for the Golden Corral 500 on Friday at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. Bill Lester stole the show. Lester who was a perminent fixture on the Craftsman Truck Series for the past couple of seasons, Lester became the first black man to qualify for a NASCAR Nextel Cup series in nearly twenty years, since the great road racer Willy T. Ribbs ran three events in 1986. Prior to that the most successful black driver was the legendary Wendell Scott. Scott who ran nearly 500 races in the 50's and 60's, and had his only Cup win in 1964.
Lester qualified at 190.502 mph running nearly six mph faster than he did in practice. Upon exiting his Bill Davis Racing Waste Management Dodge he told TV reporters from Speed Channel,"I only need to hold my breath for 30 or 35 more drivers". "Im glad I was able to realize my dream and get this opportunity."
Lester who qualified 19th was the fastest of the competitors who where not covered by being one of the top 35 in owner Points.
The top five behind Kahne where Ryan Newman in the Alltel Dodge, Jeff Burton in the RCR Cingular Chevy, Bobby Labonte in the Cherrios Dodge from Petty Enterprises, followed by Rookie and former USAC stand out JJ Yeley. So far it seems like the Labonte Petty combination is starting to already show dividens.

Opps He Did it Again
Category: NASCAR / Oval Track Racing | Posted February 13, 2006 by Brian Losness
Chad Knaus, Crew Chief on the Lowes Chevrolet driven by Jimmy Johnson is facing suspension (again). Knaus once again has tried to sneak one by the NASCAR tech guys and got caught. This time a device that would raise the rear window of the car forcing air up over the rear spoiler was detected during post qualifing inspection. The device was activated after the car went through the room of doom (NASCAR'S inspection chamber.) Johnsons qualifing run was disallowed and he will have to start from the back of the pack in the duel 150's on Thursday.
Johnsons car was not impounded but NASCAR spokesman Jim Hunter said the possibility of it being done on Monday was not ruled out. If this is done Johnson will be forced to run his Hendrick's Motorsports back up cars in the duels. Hunter also stated "this is a flagrant attempt to gain a competitive advantage, this is a serious infraction."
This is not the first time that Knaus has been called onto the carpet in the big yellow truck. Last year at Las Vegas he was suspended for two races and fined 35,000 dollars and both car owner Rick Hendrick and driver Jimmy Johnson were docked 25 owner and driver points for roof height being too low in post race inspection at Las Vegas. Hendricks appealed the ruling and Knaus' suspension was overturned but the fines and point deductions where inforced.
